Wool dogs are made entirely by hand from raw wool and other natural fibers. Layers of wool fiber are built up using the technique of needle felting. The use of different colors and textures of wool allow each sculpture to take on the characteristics and markings of the original dog, making each wool dog a unique piece of art.

About needle felting.

Felting with wool is a very tactile process. Layers of raw wool fibers are overlaid and poked many times with a special barbed needle which causes the fibers of the wool to interlock with each other and become joined together. The more times they are poked, the firmer the material becomes. When creating wool dogs, the wool is felted enough to create a stable sculpture, but the outermost layers are only minimally felted, which means that the dogs maintain a light, ethereal quality rather than being hard and rigid.

Needle felting is a very slow and deliberate process. Small amounts of wool are added at a time, and felted with a single needle before the next layer is added. Colors are blended together to match coat color as closely as possible, and each dog features handmade glass eyes. Each finished dog is the result of hours of work. No kits, molds or patterns are used, ensuring that each sculpture is truly one of a kind.
